Surgery revealed a distended loop of duodenum (the section of small intestine that connects to the stomach). Notice the dark discoloration of this segment. This is due to compromised blood flow and would eventually die and rupture if surgery had not been performed. Also, notice the plication (scrunching) of the intestines. Plication occurs most commonly when an object with a string-like attachment becomes lodged in the stomach and the string tries to pass through the intestines. As it tries to pass, the intestines start to scrunch up on the string. This may lead to decreased blood flow and or the string cutting through the wall.
